Our philosophy...
Adat Shalom is a Conservative congregation.
All prayer services at our shul are fully egalitarian, meaning
that Jewish women have the same opportunities for honors and leadership that
were traditionally reserved for Jewish men.
Conservative
Judaism is characterized by:
- A commitment to following
traditional Jewish laws and customs
- A deliberately
non-fundamentalist teaching of Jewish principles of faith.
- A positive attitude toward
modern culture
- An acceptance of both
traditional rabbinic modes of study and modern scholarship and critical text
study when considering Jewish religious texts.

Worship and Ritual...
Sabbath services are held every Friday evening at 7:30 p.m., except for the first Friday of the month, when an early service is held at 7:00 p.m. to accommodate families with young children. Each service is followed by an Oneg Shabbat and provides an opportunity to socialize with friends and neighbors. The Oneg may be sponsored by a member or group of members in honor of a special occasion, a simcha, or in memory of a loved one. The Sisterhood sponsors all unassigned Onegs. Sponsoring arrangements are made with the Sisterhood catering committee.
Saturday morning service begins at 9:15 a.m. and is followed by a Kiddush sponsored, as above, by a member or group of members, or by the Congregation.
Adat Shalom will celebrate the beautiful array of Jewish holidays and all other rituals. Dates and times are listed in the monthly bulletin.
A great deal of time and thought is directed toward the prayers, the Torah commentary, and affirming special life cycle occasions for all who participate. Please consider coming to a Shabbat service to experience its beauty and spirituality.
Service Participation...
Services at Adat Shalom are very participatory and user-friendly. The service is choreographed primarily by our clergy and interested congregants. Every effort is taken to involve as many of our congregants as possible in each service. The design of the service is an ongoing and constantly evolving process. If you are interested in this area, contact a member of the Ritual Committee.
Everyone is encouraged to participate in the service at any level in which they feel confortable. Members are encouraged to attend services and to participate in accordance with the guidelines established by the Conservative movement. For example, the guidelines from which no Conservative synagogue may deviate state that only a Jew may read from the Torah, hold the Torah, or open the Holy Ark. Adat Shalom recognizes that moms, dads, grandmothers and grandfathers of different faiths desire to participate in life cycle events. We know that participation of all family members, regardless of faith, in B'nai Mitzvot, simchot and other rituals will only serve to make the event more meaningful. Arrangements for appropriate participation can be made with our clergy.
